Clonakilla is a small, family winery dedicated to making distinctive, handcrafted wines, they can be hard to find but are worth the search
Clonakilla was established in 1971 by John Kirk, a Canberra based research scientist. Of Irish descent, John came to Australia with his young family in 1968 to work with the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry. To his surprise despite the suitability of the environment there was no wine industry in the cool southern table lands of NSW around Canberra. To remedy this situation, in 1971 he bought a 44 acre farm near the village of Murrumbateman in New South Wales, 40 kilometres north of Canberra. The soil consisted of sandy clay loams over a friable clay subsoil and, with a climate not dissimilar to the Bordeaux region and Northern Rhone valley in France, he held high hopes for its wine producing potential.

On a brightly moonlit Tuesday evening at around eleven o'clock on the Barossa to Clare road, two young blokes are cruising their way to work the midnight shift for the last vintage of the century, in a beat-up old Toyota Corolla. During the drive home, they would often crave a soft slurpy wine to wash down a hard night's work. Out of this ideal they decided to join forces and make a Grenache based wine to be enjoyed whenever the mood would take hold. As such Massena Vineyards first wine The Moonlight Run Grenache Shiraz Mataro Cinsault was born.

The Longhop and Old Plains range of wines are produced by Domenic Torzi and Tim Freeland. The former Gawler high school mates first mooted the idea of making icon wines from the Adelaide Plains in 2002. Vineyards were secured, the requirement being old vines a priority. The small band of growers have embraced the ideal of delivering premium grapes in order to showcase the power and rich fruit flavours the Adelaide Plains has to offer.
Old Plains» Provenance Wines was established in 1997 with the simple objective of making great wines that exhibit the fruit quality and terroir of special vineyards in and around the Geelong viticultural region
Owner winemaker Scott Ireland has been involved in the wine industry for over twenty five vintages. Experience gained from extensive travel and work in the wine industry throughout Australia, France and the US led to the desire to create his own brand of wines. Wines representative of their source (provenance), but shaped by his feel for the winemaking craft/ art. Scott is a passionate (surely Richo should get an honorary Brownlow) Tiger supporter who loves nothing more than relaxing on his old wooden boat, glass in hand. The wine industry provides both challenge and solace for him.

The adage that great wine is made from great fruit, drives the efforts in the vineyard. Celestial Bay's wine is crafted from exclusively estate grown fruit to maintain control over every aspect of the production process. Fruit is picked at the level of ripeness required for each style of wine. Vigilance is paid to cropping levels to allow the vines to achieve optimum ripeness and concentration of flavour and colour compounds. This often involves hand management of the vineyard, dropping fruit when excess crop is developing and managing canopy structure to provide the most efficient utilisation of sun energy and optimal bunch exposure. Extensive experience making wine in the Margaret River region and time working in France have shaped the approach at Celestial Bay. New World winemaking requires fastidious attention to hygiene in the winery, effective management of fermentation microbiology, careful stewardship of the wine post fermentation to bottling, whilst employing an artisanal approach to the vinification.

Mt. Monster is synonymous with premium wines grown to the Padthaway region being awarded over 80 medals in International and Australian Wine shows in recent years. The vineyards are planted on their own rootstock to some of the world’s oldest mineral rich soils and in the most temperate of maritime climates. The Mt. Monster vineyard consistently produces excellent fruit quality from low yielding vines. Only the best parcels of fruit are carefully selected and utilized for the Mt. Monster label. Great attention to detail is paid, the integration of fruit flavours and fine oak barrels helps produce classic handcrafted wine styles. The wines express full varietal flavours, taking full advantage of the Padthaway’s maritime climate with its long slow ripening season and unique soils.

Bellarmine Vineyard was planted in 2000 and is owned by a German doctor, Dr Willi Schumacher and his wife Gudrun Schumacher. The Schumachers are passionate about great wine and searched the world for a place to plant vines before they chose what has become the Bellarmine property. The vineyard is an elevated site with gravelly laterite soils. Since the first vintage in 2004, Bellarmine has been consistently producing stunning wines. Bellarmine Wines is rated 5 stars out of five by renowned wine reviewer James Halliday.

The 100 hectare estate surrounds the historic homestead on the Icely Road leading to where gold was first discovered in Australia in 1851. The original school house on the estate now serves as a Cellar Door & restaurant specialising in local produce. The cool climate and low vigour soil induces an extended, gradual ripening period which allows the grapes to develop flavour and colour that translates into elegant wines of distinction. Reliable rainfall in late winter and spring provides a good start to the season giving way to drier ripening months of February, March and April. The grapes are harvested late March to early May. Degree day summation for October to April is 1309 degrees with an average of 1856 hours of sunshine. This makes Orange one of the sunniest cool climate regions in Australia and plays a major role in producing grapes and wine of distinct fruit flavours and colour.

The Hay Shed Hill property was a group settlement farm for returned soldiers from the 1st World War and was originally established as a diary farm. The current homestead, considerably renovated, still has much of the original Group Settlement look and feel. Vines were first planted in 1973 to the varieties which have put Margaret River on the wine map; Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The property was known as Sussex Vale until 1989 when it was bought by Barry & Liz Morrison. The Morrison’s were instrumental in establishing what you see today, managing to turn a fairly run down farm with a few vines into a quality grape producer with nearly 18 ha of vines. The place was planted right, the right varieties on the right slopes with the right soils. The winemakers today enjoy the advantage of working with truly mature vines.

John and Patricia Kennedy spent their childhood on farms and have a genuine love for the land and the way of life. In 1981 they began wheat and sheep farming at Corop in north central Victoria. They started with basic machinery, quality soil and plenty of enthusiasm. In 1982 the Kennedys ventured into growing tomatoes. The fact that they had no experience in this form of horticulture was given only passing concern. In 2001, while still growing tomatoes and cereals, they decided to acquire land on the Mount Camel Range. This land has been prized for cereal cropping and in later years much sought after for grape production.
Kennedy» Robert Crabtree studied law at Oxford University and was a practising lawyer/ academic at Cambridge, he always had an interest in viticulture and made fruit wines as a hobby
Crabtree's curiosity in winemaking led him to complete two vintages at Bergerac and another in New Zealand, before landing in Australia and deciding that he would become a full time winemaker. After careful selection of possible wine regions, Robert decided that the Clare Valley was to be the region of choice. Whilst studying winemaking at Roseworthy, Robert purchased a small existing property at Watervale in 1980 and named it Watervale Cellars. In 1983 Robert purchased the old Flax Mill building in Auburn. He equipped it as a small (somewhat rough and ready) winery and planted two acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. The business became known as Crabtree’s Watervale Cellars for a number of years. Robert built an enviable reputation for fine classic Watervale wines over the following 27 years and became a passionate advocate for the Clare Valley and South Australian wine industry. Robert sold his beloved property and winery in 2007 but remains a welcome friend and advisor to the new Crabtree Crew.
Crabtree» Rahona Valley Wines is nestled within the elevated aspects of Red Hill which overlooks Mount Martha and Port Phillip Bay in the west, Point Leo and Westernport Bay to the east
The estate's wines are all produced from a single four acre vineyard in a small valley at Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. The conditions are excellent, deep, well drained red basalt soils nurture the vines, as the cool maritime climes lead to a long, slow ripening period. Starting from scratch in 1991, the north facing 1.6 hectare vineyard surrounded by bushland now has 5000 hand tended vines of mostly Pinot Noir with a small block of Pinot Meunier. Here at Rahona Valley, the vines are mature and the drinkers are noticing the difference. All vines are own rooted, so provided there are a couple more generations of dedicated vignerons and winemakers, characteristics should compare with Burgundy. Rahona Valley's best wines are aged in the barrel for 18 months or more, whereas the normal process is to bottle after 12 months so that barrels can be reused for the next harvest.
