Even as the ink was drying on the Petaluma purchase in 2001, Brian Croser's friends at Champagne Bollinger were forming a pact with the Croser family to begin again
Then along came the Cazes family from Chateau Lynch Bages in Pauillac. On a trip to Australia in 2002, Jean-Michel and his son Jean-Charles met with Croser and joined the partnership. The driving ambition was to own and make wine from the more than 30-year old Koppamurra Vineyard just north of Coonawarra. Tapanappa was born and Koppamurra Vineyard was acquired in late 2002. The property has since been renamed Whalebone Vineyard. The partnership was founded in a strong, mutually held belief that some pieces of ground are much better than others for the production of fine wine. Of course this superiority is highly specific to varieties and wine style. The Whalebone Vineyard and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular have a unique synergy. Croser learned of the wonderful quality of Cabernet from the Whalebone Vineyard 25 years ago when in 1980, he assisted Geoff Weaver to make his very first wine from this vineyard under the Ashbourne label.

In establishing the vineyard, the proprietors searched for land that would provide the best conditions for consistently producing a premium Pinot Noir in a elegant Central Otago style. The chosen site is situated on Earnscleugh Road, across the Clutha River from Alexandra. The property enjoys high sunshine hours and high mean temperatures and is sufficiently harsh and difficult to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of spring and autumn frosts, providing a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of premium pinot noir.

That something special was rich undulating fields in the shadows of Mt Ida at Heathcote in central Victoria. Tony and Linda Hunter's vision was to create a family run boutique vineyard where quality, passion and energy were reflected in the wine. Sanguine Estate vineyard and winery, established in 1997, is located approximately 5km along the Northern Highway from the turn off to Echuca, north of Heathcote. Embraced by children Mark and Jodi and their respective partners Melissa and Brett, the family worked weekends to establish the initial 16 acres that grew rapidly over the following years to 55 acres in 2002. The family's desire to produce great wine flows through every glass. Through natural winemaking techniques combined with small batch processing and hand plunging, the purity and integrity of the wine is enhanced.

Marschall Groom Cellars is the culmination of a dream, backed up by many years of talk and family discussion. The proprietors are David & Jeanette Marschall and their six children, and Daryl & Lisa Groom and their four children. The dream started to become reality with the purchase of 87 acres of bare land in the Kalimna appellation of the Barossa Valley, directly adjacent to the renowned Penfolds Kalimna vineyard - the home of Grange. In 1997 the first acres on their Kalimna Bush Block were planted to Shiraz, producing its first crop in the 1999 vintage. To compliment the young Shiraz fruit, Marschall Groom source from one other very reputable high quality site in the Barossa, the Fechner Vineyard which is home to 50 year-old vines.

In 2003 a couple of influential winemakers and shadowy ruffians decided there was some fun to be had by putting together some pretty neat parcels of fruit from the region, creating their own label, releasing it with minimal fuss, and then remaining anonymous until the dust settles. Brad is the public face. He's the guy who makes all the decisions. He embodies the grower, maker and marketer, and he enjoys a drop too. There's a little bit of Brad inhabiting all of us to some degree. Some say he is a mythical figure but we dispute this vehemently! He is the guy we have chosen to represent every aspect of our wine. This wine is Brad. With a CV that includes some of the legends of Margaret River wine (Leeuwin Estate, Xanadu) he was a natural to deal with the day-to-day driving of the Brad bus. And he was the only guy called Brad that wanted the job.

Ellis graduated as Dux of his winemaking course from Roseworthy College in 1971 and began his illustrious winemaking career at Krondorf and Yalumba wineries. In 1974 John went to the Hunter Valley to become the foundation winemaker at the newly established Rosemount Estate. Within two years John had put Rosemount Estate on the map internationally and made a name for himself as one of the young Turks of the industry. The next move came in 1978 when John, with his wife Ann Tyrrell, went to Echuca on the Murray River in Victoria, to help establish the Tisdall Winery. Tisdall quickly became a high profile and successful brand in the seventies and early eighties, enjoying something of a cult following.

Stoney Rise was started in 2000 with an eye to produce wines that are food friendly, and offer people complex wines without too much oak, or overripe fruit characters. The name comes from a surf break in the Little Dip Conservation Park behind Robe in South Australia. After 10 years in the wine industry, as a sales rep, a wine buyer, and more recently working in wineries it was time for Holyman to make the break and do something on his own. Holyman spent time working in New Zealand, Portugal and France, as well as Tasmania, Mt Benson and Coonawarra, which has given him a broad understanding of wine styles, and how many different people make their wines.
Stoney Rise» The Chain of Ponds winery was established in 1985 on the outskirts of Gumeracha, approximately 4km from the original township
The Chain of Ponds initially described a creek which ran all the way from beyond Kersbrook to its confluence with the River Torrens near Prairie in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. The area was dotted at regular intervals with small ponds, having no visible connection above the ground but never drying up even in the driest, hottest summers. Much of the chain of water holes known as the Chain of Ponds vanished under the waters of the Millbrook Reservoir in 1918. While vineyards have been part of the makeup of the area since colonisation, the Chain of Ponds Winery was the first major planting of any note in the northern area of the Adelaide Hills region.
