There were two scrub covered parcels of land, just outside Pokolbin village along McDonalds Road, that local council had long set aside for use as cricket ground and cemetery. Both were ultimately auctioned off to the highest bidders and sown to vine. A third undeveloped site became the subject of a long running feud among the new and old neighbours. Dodgy invoices between the rivals were exchanged and the division of firewood became a further cause of contention. A truce was eventually called by the two protagonists, Brokenwood and Hungerford Hill, for the sake of healthy viticulture. The nascent blocks achieved international renown as the eminent Cricket Pitch and the Langtons Listed Graveyard Vineyard, establishing Brokenwood as one of the most cherished marques in Hunter Valley wine... Graeme Melton and a mate were travelling across South Australia in 1973, their EH Holden was in dire need of maintenance and Graeme took up casual work at a passing winery. The site supervisor was Peter Lehmann and young Graeme had his epiphany on the road to Barossa Valley. Lehmann suggested that Graeme change his name to Charlie and take the pilgrimmage to Vallee Rhone. Charlie became prepossessed with the culture of old vines Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre. He returned to the Barossa, at a time when old vineyard fruit was made into flagon Port and growers were destroying their historic sites in return for government grants. Charlie emabarked on a crusade to conserve and restore the ancient vines, establishing his cellars at Tanunda along Krondorf Road. He has since retained the most precious parcels, once destined for the logger's axe, they are now the genesis of fruit.. Melton makes a mean mourvedre»

Zilzie Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris CONFIRM VINTAGE

Pinot Gris Grigio Adelaide Hills South Australia
The Forbes have been growing fruit for generations, they've won many accolades around the national wine show circuit and supplied grapes to Southcorp for some of Australia's most favourite and memorable vintages. In their quest to craft the essential expression of Australian Pinot Gris, they have collated parcels of hand picked grapes from the balmy, elevated, cool ripening climes of Adelaide Hills. Juicy and decidedly varietal, Zilzie is vibrant with crisp orchard fruit characters and a brisk minerality before finishing, intense, savoury and refreshingly dry.

Parcels of Pinot Gris are hand harvested from good vineyards in the Adelaide Hills. The cool growing season and orientation of vines maximises sunlight, aiding in the development of rich and vibrant fruit. Well balanced canopies protect the delicate berries from summer sun. Hand picked grapes are whole bunch pressed to minimise colour and phenolic extraction. Juices are cold settled and treated to vinification through the action of aromatic yeasts at lower temperatures, in a combination of well seasoned oak puncheons and controlled fermenters. Upon completion, the finished wine is promptly bottled to capture and retain the freshness and vitality of Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris.
Pale straw with green hues. Beautiful aromas of nashi pear, citrus and jasmine florals, citrus blossom and nectarine over background mineral characters. A delicate palate with fresh fruit flavours of nashi and nectarine, creamy, richly textured mid palate and a fine minerality. Enjoy with crisp fried whiting or seared scallop sushi.
