Gran Sasso Montepulciano dAbruzzo 2011
Montepulciano is grown throughout most of Italy, where it is used to make fresh, early drinking red wines. Planted to good vineyards in the Abruzzo region along the Adriatic coast however, it acquires a rare persona and charm, whence it's engaging herb and bramble character can be fashioned into an appealing savoury style. Gran Sasso make a Montepulciano that's difficult to put down, they work closely with their growers to attain a quality of fruit that lends itself to a deeply plum flavoured wine with clean finish and sleek tannins that calls for cuisine.

The Gran Sasso winemaking team work very closely with growers, ensuring that the vines are treated to the right amount of pruning and care. Parcels of Montepulciano are assembled from individually owned and operated vineyards within the premier Abruzzo viticultural precincts of Ortona, San Salvo and Pollutri. Fruit is harvested to a schedule determined by complete ripeness off vines up to twenty years of age and brought to the wineworks at Ortona. Components are treated to a combination of old world and modern vinification techniques, followed by a term of unoaked maturation to soften the tannins and achieve integration while retaining the essential vitality of Montepulciano fruit.
Deep ruby red with garnet hues. Purple floral nose with black olive and cherry scents, the savoury of seawater and tapenade. A freshness and directness of fruit characters on the palate which are outstanding for an Abruzzi, plums, liqorice and chinotto resolve on a drying, vinous finish. It's fine medium bodied structure, fruit filled acidity and clean uncomplicated tannins make Gran Sasso an ideal partner to food, grills, meatballs or roasted ham.
