Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2009

Voyager Estate are in pursuit of elegance, structure and minerality within the low alcohol spectrum of Chardonnay. The fruit profile is distinctly Margaret River, very creamy with the regional dried pear and pink grapefruit showing through. The palate is tight and long with excellent texture, a creamy mouthfeel, meal and nut.

Grapes are hand harvested to modest baumés and natural sugar profiles. Picking at such levels creates a wine with sufficiently low alcohol, displaying a balance and delicacy that is often lost in Australian Chardonnay. The fruit is immediately taken to the winery, cooled overnight and whole bunch pressed. Components were barrel fermented in a combination of new and prior use French oak (François frères, Dargaud & Jaegle, Damy, Seguin Moreau). In order to get the benefits of subtle texture without losing the fruit freshness in the wine, a smaller component was inoculated for a further malolactic fermentation. Voyager was treated to regular battonage and ageing in French oak barriques.

Pale straw colour. The classic southern Margaret River nose of grapefruit and dried pear fruits dominate at this early stage. Plenty of nutty flavours and mealy notes from the lees stirring and quality French oak. Displays ripe stone fruits, dried pear, tropical fruits and noticeable creamy nuttiness from the lees contact. Lovely soft and textured fruits dominate the palate. The early picking, wild fermentation, use of grape solids and ongoing battonage gives the wine complexity and balance. These winemaking techniques combined with high quality French oak produce a wine with ample flavour and texture, yet still refined and structured, as all of Voyager Estate's resplendent Chardonnays always are.
