Henschke Mount Edelstone 2005
Outstanding Langtons Classification. Edelstone means gemstone, the vineyard itself is a single delineated historic site planted in the early 1900s on the eastern slopes of a hill bearing the same name. Low yielding ancient dry grown vines, extraordinary fruit, and traditional hands-on winemaking are pivotal to one of Australia's most highly sought Old-Vine Shiraz.

Ronald Angas planted the distinguished Edelstone Vineyard in 1912. The forty acre site was planted to Shiraz vines, probably sourced through Joseph Gilbert at Pewsey Vale. The original pre-phylloxera material most likely originated from the James Busby selection, which was propagated by Samuel Smith of Yalumba in the 1850s. Whilst planted purely as a Shiraz vineyard, there have been found ten rogue vines of bastardo. The anthocyanins in the berries at Mount Edelstone are very high which indicates the superior quality of the Shiraz fruit. Henschke first released a pure Edelstone Vineyard wine in 1952, and since then it's been regarded as a bespoke rival to the great Hill of Grace. Alcohol 14.0%
Deep crimson in colour with a purple hue. Powerful, ripe aromas of blackberry and plum with complexing hints of star anise, ferns, eucalypt and dark chocolate. Dense, ripe and rich, with a lush texture and ripe, licorice-tinged dark fruit. The palate is an intense and concentrated blend of sweet, juicy plum pudding fruit and structured ripe tannin. With mouthfilling power, seamless texture and lingering finish the wine displays the hallmark characters of the Mount Edelstone vineyard in one of its greatest years.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1978
Henschke Hill of Grace 1978 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line The Hill of Grace came up as a majestic and long-term Shiraz, in vintage 1978. The growing season was dry but temperate, unhampered by environmental vagaries, the old vine fruit was allowed to develop to textbook ripeness, the finished wine represented a classic Australian red of richness and longevity. Honest, earthy and tarry, an almost porty-ripe Shiraz cuvee, the 1978 initially exhibited fleshiness and lively sweet fruit combined with a firm tannic backbone. An honest and generous edition with integrated oak and supple finish.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1979
Henschke Hill of Grace 1979 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line Hill of Grace, the name of the vineyard and the wine that has so captured the heart of Shiraz lovers, shared an unfavourable growing season with most of Australia's winegrowing regions. Hot and dry throughout summer, a prolonged wet autumn, tested the ancient vines, and the superlative skill of the Henschke growers. Nevertheless, 1979 produced a delicate and refined Hill of Grace, worthy of the name's stature. A lighter, sweeter, pleasantly plump and jammy wine with ripe, brambly fruit, oak influence and supple, soft tannins.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1980
Henschke Hill of Grace 1980 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line Henschke is one of the longest established names in the Barossa. Johann Christian Henschke purchased land for a farm at Keyneton in 1861, after fleeing religious persecution in Silesia. He planted a small vineyard and an orchard, and after initially making wine for family consumption produced his first commercial vintage in 1868. Each generation built upon the reputation for quality, but it was fourth generation Cyril Alfred Henschke who in 1958 created the wine that has most captured the red wine world's imagination, Hill of Grace.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1981
Henschke Hill of Grace 1981 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line A growing season which proved too hot and dry for most vineyards across South Australia, budburst and fruit set were a disappointment, bringing softer yields which continued to diminish throughout the summer. The Henschke wines from 1981 stood out brilliantly, as the painstaking traditional viticulture and know-how came into it's own. Hill of Grace was spared the excesses of the vintage, yielding generous and robust fruit with good tannin levels, ideal for flavour development. A genuine, but rare class effort from 1981.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1982
Henschke Hill of Grace 1982 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line A favourable summer, experiencing warm and even temperatures was preceded by much welcomed rains, which nourished the Henschke vineyards early on in the growing season. The vines flourished in the good conditions of the vintage, unfettered by climactic setbacks, Shiraz ripened beautifully, the batches of fruit came in on time, and in remarkable shape.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1983
Henschke Hill of Grace 1983 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line A disastrous vintage across most of Australia's winegrowing regions, the 1983 growing season was one which most Australian wineries would rather forget. Fires (the cataclysmic Ash Wednesday) hail, drought and heat, it all happened in 1983. Somehow, the Henschke vineyards cocooned around the higher Eden Valley seemed to rise above the adversities of the vintage and produce a very fine Hill of Grace, a deep dense Shiraz wine with well featured, integrated oak and good concentration of sweet, ripe varietal fruit characters.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1984
Henschke Hill of Grace 1984 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line A long period of dry, drought-like conditions was broken by welcomed rains early in the 1984 growing season, which heralded an opportunity to produce good ripe Eden Valley Shiraz. The vintage turned warm at harvest, finishing a good year with typically favourable conditions, the Hill of Grace exhibited prime fruit concentration and elegance. Slightly more restrained and reserved than releases from similarly warm vintages, the old Eden Valley vines yielded Shiraz of tightness and balance, Henschke Hill of Grace again led the way.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1985
Henschke Hill of Grace 1985 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line Vintage 1985 proved too hot and dry for most vineyards within the environs of the Eden and Barossa valleys, severely reduced crops for most South Australian wineries were further dashed by the ravages of a very wet autumn. Henschke Hill of Grace 1988
Henschke Hill of Grace 1988 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line 1988 brought outstanding Shiraz fruit to the Eden Valley. A smaller yield due to spring frosts, the bulk of the growing season was long, warm and dry, ideal for the Henschke vineyards. Henschke Hill of Grace 1989
Henschke Hill of Grace 1989 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line One of the few exceptional reds, out of what was a lesser vintage around Australia's winegrowing regions. Inconsistent weather patterns, followed by February heatwaves, made unremarkable wines everywhere, some of the Barossa and Eden Valley vineyards however, somehow managed to pull through and yield individual parcels of premium quality fruit. Hill of Grace delivered a cool, musky Shiraz this year, with a light aroma of sweet red berries and violets, caramel and vanilla oak, concentrated with flavours, a great balance and long finish.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1991
Henschke Hill of Grace 1991 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line A winery that gets my nod as one of Australia's two or three finest producers. 1991 Shiraz Hill of Grace, the most backward of the Henschke wines, with an earthy minerality, and explosive black fruits the likes of which are often seen in northern Rhone Valley wines made from ancient vines. This huge, broodingly backward, muscular, brawny, immensely concentrated yet formidably endowed wine requires another 4-5 years of cellaring; it should keep for 15-20 years. These are awesome examples of what Australia is capable of producing.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1994
Henschke Hill of Grace 1994 - Buy Australian & New Zealand Wines On Line It was presented blind. I worked out that it was a beautiful Barossa Shiraz but its relative youth totally fooled me with respect to its age. It has quite a deep garnet red colour in the glass. The aromas that seem to ooze out of the glass are of rich red fruits, a bit of leather and a hint of fennel. The palate is long and powerful showing fruit flavours complimented by secondary flavours that combine to give a very nice package. I have no idea of the oak used but, I would love to see this in another ten to fifteen years.
