Geoff Merrill is one of Australia's most accomplished winemakers. Merrill Reserve is a compilation of his best wines, as selected from small batches which have been treated to an extended maturation. Following a traineeship at B Seppelt & Son, a stint in South Africa, and a period as assistant winemaker with Thomas Hardy and Chateau Reynella, Geoff Merrill acquired the beautiful but derelict Mount Hurtle wineworks in 1985 Merrill devoted years of love and hard work to restore the winery and vineyard to it's former glory. The property produces some of the finest Shiraz anywhere in McLaren Vale. Following vinification, a rigorous selection of the most spectacular barrels are assembled into the final wine, aged under oak and laid to rest for a spell of bottle development under the estate cellar prior to release. Merrill Reserve was matured for twenty eight two in a selection of small French oak barrels.
Dark red with ruby hues. With time in the glass, the aroma offers many different and complex characters, initial creamy vanilla and raspberry notes evolve through spice, pepper, liquorice and plum. The palate displays fresh fruits and a silky texture over very fine tannins. Toasted smoky oak, balanced acid and concentrated fruit flavours provide great structure. Youthful and vibrant, the complexities that only bottle age can bring are just beginning to shine. Drinking very well now, as bottle development continues to add new dimensions of enjoyment. Well constructed and flavoursome, velvety smooth, generous with layer upon layer of fruit, one of the country's pre-eminent Shiraz wines, in astonishingly fine balance.
