High Plains Durif 2004

Fruit for the High Plains 2004 Durif was sourced from a single vineyard located high on the Northern facing slopes of the King Valley. The winemakers tasted and assessed the fruit every 3-4 days, to ensure harvesting at the fruits optimum ripeness and varietal flavour. The use of vertical shoot positioning and double wire trellising enabled maximum sunlight penetration into the canopy, which is vital for Durif to ripen as it requires greater sunlight hours than other varieties. A slow ripening microclimate and fastidious winemaking have produced an aromatic and delicious Durif.

The 2004 Durif was crushed and fermented in open 3 ton stainless steel fermentors and hand plunged twice daily to maximise the extraction of flavour and colour from the grape skins. Fermentation was 9 days with the wine remaining on skins for a further 5 days prior to pressing. The finished wine was matured in 30% new French oak barrels for 12 months and fined with egg whites used before bottling. Alcohol 14.5% Ph 3.45 Acidity 6.60 g/l.

This Durif has a bright violet hue with a spicy mulberry aroma. Synonymous with this variety is the powerful texture and ripe tannin structure on the palate balanced by the sweet chocolate and vanillin flavours of new French oak barrels. Aromatic and poised, this wine offers reems of candy violet nuances and fruity tannin structure. The High Plains Durif is crafted to age well over the next 10 years and will accompany any hearty meat dish or nice open fire.
