Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry, the first qualified winemaker to work in Clare Valley. Jim had a good eye for site potential, he established some of the most distinguished vineyards and had an uncanny intuition as to which grape would best suit the soil. He planted Cabernet vines on the picturesque thirty acre Cover Drive property near the site of the old Penola cricket grounds, atop some of the Coonawarra's most precious soils.

Pure varietal whites coming out of the Clare Valley are an inspiration to all winemakers, the distinctive qualities of the region imbue the gently flavoured wines with harmonies and charming florals. Lavender Hill is named after a stand of native shrub in the hills alongside the Jim Barry winery. Ever since the inaugural release of Jim Barry in 1974, this genteel wine has been made from the small lavender infused parcel. Perfectly suited to spritzers, the residual sweetness makes it ideal for a variety of foods, seafood platters or Thai, good desserts and fine cheese.

Jim Barry Lodge Hill Riesling 2012

Jim Barry acquired the Lodge Hill vineyard in 1977, as he was sure it would produce some of the best Riesling wines. Situated on the eastern ranges of the township of Clare, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Valley at an altitude of 480 metres, and is ideal for producing steely, mineral Rieslings, distinctive to the area. Clare Valley is one of the few regions in the world that produce this dry, delicate style with less than two grams of residual sugar per litre. The pinnacle of satisfaction, we can all be glad that Jim Barry planted Riesling.

Jim Barry Lodge Hill Shiraz 2011

When Jim Barry first purchased the Lodge Hill property, his intention was to devote the entire area to white grapes. While Jim was conducting a soil analysis, he recognised his good fortune, discovering a very different soil profile on a small north-facing slope. Warmer than the rest of the property, Jim decided it was the perfect place for premium Shiraz vines. His foresight lead to great triumph just before his passing, when Lodge Hill was awarded Best International Shiraz at the prestigious International Wine Challenge in London.

In 1964 Jim Barry purchased seventy acres of prime river flats from Duncan McRae Wood in the Armagh area of Clare Valley and planted his first vineyard with Shiraz. It was an inspired choice of variety and location. The site would go on to become the foundation of Jim Barry's red wine production, and to grow the superlative grapes which are earmarked for the world renowned The Armagh. McCrae Wood is a big, full bodied wine with extravagant palate in true Jim Barry fashion, exhibiting deep tannins, lovely textures and ripe, concentrated flavours.

Each year, winemaker Peter Barry takes delivery of three little pigs. Whilst these personable porkers exude charm and affability, Peter finds their contribution to the family's famous Christmas hams of most interest. Three Little Pigs shows excellent depth of fruit and a solid structure, the palate is generous with a focal point of primarily blackberry, plum and sloe berries over the savouryness of oak and fine grained, talcy tannins. An excellent choice with good food, highly recommended with barbequed ribs, pork and gourmet bangers.

The tiny village of Watervale, situated just south of Clare township with a population of 246, is internationally renowned for the quality of its Riesling. It has long delivered some of the nation's most distinguished and memorable wines.
