Stoney Rise Pinot Noir 2011

Stoney Rise is all about drinkability, the creation of complex, fully approachable food friendly wines, without any excessive oak or overripeness. Pinot Noir goes into the oldest barrels available to soften the tannins and refine textures without overpowering the sensual fruit characters. Stoney Rise vineyard in the Tamar Valley is planted to a meagre three hectares of Pinot Noir, yielding trophy winning wines and attracting high praises since inaugural release, by virtue of a passion for growing grapes and penchant for Pinot Noir in the European tradition.

Stoney Rise is a boutique vineyard and cellar door in Tamar Valley, the brainchild of Joe Holyman and his wife Lou. After a career and family background in the wine industry, Holyman acquired his own vineyard with a view to fulfilling his own passion for growing the finest quality wine grapes in the very special cool climates of Tasmania's north. The vineyard, planted to three hectares of Pinot Noir and one of Chardonnay, was established in 1986. Holyman has made the most of his experience, following a career in New Zealand and Tasmania, Portugal and France, Mt Benson and Coonawarra, to formulate distinctive small batch wines which express the influences of a unique mesoclime and terroir.

Deep ruby colour. The nose has lifted fruit aromas with hints of violet, cherry and spice. The palate is full and rich, expressing bright berry characters on a solid fruit structure leading to a long finish. Great with grilled salmon or marinated beef tartare.
