Encounters with pure varietal Mourvèdre wine are rare. The origins are almost certainly Spanish where it is called Monastrell, the principal black grape of the five appellations around Spain's southeast and a component of the great growths from the Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape.

Turkey Flat is still the luminary, having taken the lead of the great Aussie Rosé revival. The winemaking team take the task of making Australia's best Rosé very seriously, dedicating an entire vineyard to ensure the continuity of style. A cépage of Grenache and Shiraz, Dolcetto and Cabernet Sauvignon, drier than most, displaying a complexity with balance that's very rare indeed.

Distinguished Langtons Classification. Much of the credit for the best Shiraz made in the Barossa is due to old vines such as Turkey Flat. Dry grown, their roots extend metres into the soil in search of moisture. That they still exist is largely due to a far sighted quarantine scheme, as South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated the vineyards of Europe, America and subsequently parts of Australia in the late 1800s. Planted in 1847, the precious, gnarled old vines contribute the backbone of fruit for Turkey Flat Shiraz.
