Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet 2011

Leconfield's highly cherished flagship has been in fine form for years. Vintage 2006 won South Australian Cabernet of the Year at the Advertiser Hyatt Awards and Trophy at the prestigious London International. Vintage 2008 claimed Gold Royal Sydney. Already displaying lashings of ripe cassis fruit underpinned by solid structure, Leconfield has been treated to a tasteful oak maturation with several workings in a selection of the finest oak hogsheads, softening the tannins and filling out the flavour without masking the outstanding quality of fruit.

Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship of Leconfield since the first monumental release in 1977. The aim is to produce a Cabernet wine displaying depth and elegance where oak complexes and enhances the fruit but is not allowed to dominate. Following inoculation to saccharomyces cerevisiae, the majority of components have been barrel fermented in predominantly French oak, while extended skin maceration has contributed to the structure, achieving the well established statuesque Leconfield style. Following completion of malolactic and a period of exposure to lees in barrel, Leconfield is aged seventeen months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oaks. Alcohol 13.5%

Medium to full red, attractive crimson hues. Augmenting the elegant cassis and blackberry fruit aromas are scented cinnamon, nutmeg and cedar notes. Fine, medium bodied palate, showing the cassis flavours of traditional Coonawarra Cabernet. Fine velvety tannins balance the textured sweetness of fruit. A tight clean finish, approachable as a youthful wine, the elegance will complement continental inspired cuisine.

Winemaker's philosophy with the Three Regions Shiraz is to search out the premium quality fruit from premium Shiraz grape growing areas of South Australia and blend them to produce a synergy of Shiraz flavours from vineyards that can produce quality fruit.The base wine of Adelaide Hills gives the spicy elegant characters while the Adelaide Plains contributes generous fruitiness, combining with the richness that was well recognized by Wolf Blass in fruit from Langhorne Creek.

Leconfield occupies some of the Coonawarra's richest Terra rosa over limestone soils, a composition that's idyllic for superior Cabernet Sauvignon. The aim is to craft a wine endowed with great palate depth and weight of fruit whilst retaining elegance, where oak complexes and enhances the fruit but is not allowed to dominate. Several components of Leconfield complete their fermentations in barrel while the balance is treated to extra time on skins before pressing and filling into the highest quality French oak for an extravagant, extended maturation.

Significantly, the vines are in their third decade of productivity and yield a distinctly elegant Merlot wine of great sophistication and exquisite balance, suitably swathed in a robe of fine, silky tannins.
