Silver Medal vintage at Wine Asia Exhibition in Singapore, and top Gold at Rutherglen Wine Show, the home of Durif. A small parcel of premium fruit grown in the excellent conditions at the Lake Marmal vineyard in Central Victoria has yielded another super vintage of Connor Park's Durif. Rich and ripe, the winemakers recognized the fruit offered serious potential as it was brought into the winery. Connor Park handcrafts the vigorous Durif into a cassy red, the emphasis being on the quality of fruit grown in the vineyard.

Ross and Robyn Lougoon divide their time between growing premium dryland grapes, crafting award winning wines, and running a flock of 1800 merino sheep through dry and dusty paddocks. The Durif was picked by hand, then crushed and fermented in the winery next to the sheep yards. Traditional winemaking methods are used with the least possible chemical intervention. After crushing, the Durif was fermented in open vats being hand plunged and gently basket pressed. Aged in selected American oak for a year, it has reached maturity showing immense style and character. Only 900 cases produced. Alcohol 15%8% pH 3.47 Sugar 1g/L.

Nearly opaque with bright crimson edges you immediately know this is a serious wine. Turkish delight and sweet gunsmoke aromas, raspberry and meat, blueberry and anise, wafts of peanut brittle and minty lollies, dried herbs and olives. The palate does not let you down exhibiting intense black plum flavours and smokey oak. Depths of meatiness and lively sugary fruit, wide chasms filled with marvelous complexity, the slightly developed age of this Durif has introduced ribbons of tasty, wonderful fruitcake characters, cherry glace and angelica. A powerful wine with sizeable tannin that's countered by a palate of length and intensity.

Buller Calliope Durif 2006

Calliope is the name of the original vineyard established by Reginald Langdon Buller in 1921. Calliope is also the Buller estate flagship, reserved for outstanding vintages. Durif has been grown at Rutherglen for over a century, arguably the world's most precious enclave of Durif, due to the long stading phyloxera quarantine. Vintage 2004 was hailed as one of the greatest in living memory for Rutherglen, yielding an extraordinary crop of amazing intensity. Calliope continues to endure as a wine of concentrated dark plummy fruit supported by fine, lingering tannins.

Durif has been grown in the Riverina for many years where it produces strong heady wines with good colour, excellent tannins and exciting varietal fruit characters. A native of the Rhone Valley with a susceptibility to rot in cooler climes, De Bortoli's Durif is grown to sunny vineyards in the Riverina which favour the grape and stimulate the development piquant flavours. A medium bodied yet intense wine with upfront Durif complexity, supported by firm tannins and delicate oak.

Hanwood Estate Shiraz Viognier 2005

A solidly fruit focused, complex Shiraz Viognier, with a tot of Durif providing Je Ne Sais Quoi. Dry, arid conditions prevailed around southeast Australia's winegrowing regions, yet below average temperatures were experienced – very similar to the conditions of the classic 2002 vintage. The result was a refined and delicately flavoured Shiraz Viognier, with amazing depth of flavour and virility. 27.6% Hilltops, 25.7% Limestone Coast, 12.9% Heathcote, 11.4% Orange, 7.8% Riverina, 6.1% Barossa Valley, 3.1% Eden Valley, 3.1% Fleurieu, 2.3% Yarra Valley.

High Plains Durif 2004

Fruit for the High Plains 2004 Durif was sourced from a single vineyard located high on the Northern facing slopes of the King Valley. The winemakers tasted and assessed the fruit every 3-4 days, to ensure harvesting at the fruits optimum ripeness and varietal flavour. The use of vertical shoot positioning and double wire trellising enabled maximum sunlight penetration into the canopy, which is vital for Durif to ripen as it requires greater sunlight hours than other varieties. A slow ripening microclimate and fastidious winemaking have produced an aromatic and delicious Durif.

Morris of Rutherglen Durif 2009

George Francis Morris established a small vineyard in 1859, just two miles east of the current Mia Mia Morris family wineworks. The first Durif vines were planted in the 1920s but it was not until Mick Morris, the first family winemaker to be university educated, released Morris Durif under the pseudonym Claret in 1954. A Rutherglen specialty, Durif is a characteristically big wine, originally imported from Hermitage by Victoria's legendary viticulturalist Francois de Castella circa 1908.
