Merv and Judy Lange planted their first Alkoomi vines in 1971 and are pioneers of the Frankland River wine industry. Today, Alkoomi is one of the largest family owned wine producers in Western Australia. The climes around their Frankland River vineyards are so similar to those of Bordeaux, it is not surprising that the estate produces some of the best Cabernet wines in Australia. Named after the first cultivator of the site, Samuel Dunn, who lived in Amherst from the early 1850s, one of the first local settlers to plant grapes. Originally the land was exploited for sheep grazing, until diggers found the locality alive with gold. Today the property yields a tremendous Shiraz wine.
