An accomplished herdsman and shearer, Balnaves took up the challenge of planting vineyards in 1971. Working under the tutelage of legendary Coonawarra winemaker Bill Redman, Balnaves immersed himself in the culture of the vine, ultimately establishing a grande marque of Coonawarra and securing the inaugural presidency of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association. Deep peaty gold colour. Complex, oaky, apples and pears, tempting dark toffee sweetness. Dry and assertive, develops quickly to reveal rich spiciness, combined with a hint of oak and sherried fruit. Amazingly smooth for the strength, wonderfully warming, a lingering smokiness, very well rounded. The smoothness makes 105 drinkable at cask strength, but suggest adding a little water to fully explore its great depth.
