Somewhere near the Seaview end of McLaren Vale's Chapel Hill Road, a perfunctory passerine perched her pincers astride a pair of power poles and saw herself alit. Down she went amongst the dry grown branches of an old Grenache vineyard, setting the valuable veterans ablaze. The scorched site eventually came to the attention of a winemaking trio, the Messrs Leske, Tynan & Cooke, Masters of Wine and a venerable vintner, all driven by a consuming passion to make greater Grenache. Thistledown vintage very small amounts of the most extraordinary Grenache. William James Maxwell was an architectural sculptor who migrated from Scotland to Australia in 1875. He built a mock castle and established a family vineyard just outside Adelaide, which he named Woodlands Park. His son planted vines in nearby McLaren Vale and his grandson served a term as winemaker for Hardy Wines at the historic Tintara wineworks. William Maxwell's progeny remain in McLaren Vale, producing the southern hemisphere's most successful brands of Honey Mead, as well as vintages of the most extraordinary value in McLaren Vale Shiraz. Established just eleven years after the founding of South Australia, the ancient vines in the Hundred Of Moorooroo were planted circa 1836 by the Jacob brothers, after accompanying Colonel William Light on the Seven Special Surveys expedition to populate Adelaide's north. Moorooroo endures as the nation's cardinal parcel of vine, the mother rootstock for many of the Barossa's most distinguished sites. For over a century, these sacred vines contributed fruit to the Orlando company, where they formed the backbone of countless spectacular historical vintages. Decimated by the government sponsored vine pull schemes of the 1980s, only four rows of these priceless vines were saved by.. The fruit of vines established 1836»

Vega Sicilia own and operate 250 hectares of the most splendid winegrowing terroir on the Ribero Del Duero. The exacting standards involved in making Unico Cosecha begins with the husbanding of vines, which are controlled down to each detail. Vega Sicilia have established limits to the production of the estate's vines, which are not to surpass twenty two hectolitres per hectare. All are dry grown and hand pruned, yielding less than two kilos each. Grapes are never picked unless they have achieved high levels of natural sugar concentration. The finished Unicco Cosecha is matured up to ten years in a combination of seasoned and new, estate coopered oak casks and large capacity wooden vats.
Intense cherry red colour, brilliant. Complex and elegant nose, the fruit is integrated with subtle, fine oak characters. Exceptional balance on the palate, exhibiting all the elegance of a statuesque Tempranillo wine, muscular, stately and solidly structured yet elegant and refined, retaining all the liveliness of youth. Complex, flavourful and persistent.
