Charles Melton Nine Popes 2009

Distinguished Langtons Classification. Based on the wines of Chateauneuf du Pape, or home of new popes, alternate papacy of the 13th century. Drawing fruit from the only other classic Grenache growing area in the world, Melton has given this evocative grape a little Aussie twist, assembling the inspiring varietal with parcels of old vines Barossa Mourvedre and Shiraz. Litigation by the French was avoided, but problem remains, Melton's French skills were a tad light when he named the wine, assuming Chateauneuf du Pape was a reference to the nine popes.

Chateau De Beaucastel Cotes Du Rhone 2006

Pierre de Beaucastel appropriated a plot of land for himself which extended fifty two saumées at Coudoulet on the Côtes du Rhône in 1549. A tradition of fine winemaking continued at Chateau Beaucastel for centuries until 1909 when management passed to Pierre Perrin, a scientist and entrepreneur who established one of the preeminent cartels of the region. Quality of fruit, the most palatable wines and sustainable methodologies remain the focus at Beaucastel, who have used no chemical fertilisers or pesticides in their vineyards since 1964.

Chateau Monredon Cotes du Rhone 2009

The earliest vines at Mont Redon date back to ancient times. Protected from the chilling Mistral winds, the canny Romans planted them at the bottom of the hill which lends it's name to the site. In the middle of the 18th Century, nobleman Joseph Ignace d'Astier acquired Mont-Redon. His descendants still own the property, manage the vines and make Mont Redon Côtes-du-Rhône.

Château des Karantes is a magnificent vineyard situated within the La Clape Appellation on Coteaux du Languedoc at the southwest of France. The domaine lies in a small valley just two minutes away from the Mediterranean between the seaside resort towns of Narbonne Plage and St. Pierre sur Mer. The site is named after a historic Bishop of Carcassonne who owned the estate hundreds of years ago. A cépage of Grenache, Syrah and Mourverdre are fashioned into an exciting wine of piquant fruit characters and crisp, refreshing tannins.

d'Arenberg's love affair with Grenache reaches its pinnacle with Ironstone Pressings. The original block planted in 1918, on the lower side of the winery, has a plentiful amount of ironstone throughout the soil structures, which enhances the body and tannin structure of the wine. As the finished wine is a cépage of three grapes it is a matter of selecting and screening the very best Grenache barrels. They complement the Dead Arm Shiraz component which likewise complements the 28 Rd Mourvèdre portion to a point where the Grenache is beautifully framed.

Stump Jump is an assemblage of components that flowed down from the many senior wines in the d'Arenberg stable, including parcels from a range of growers. Super value and packs plenty of interest, like an Aussie Cotes-du-Rhone with meat and berries, spices and earth.
