Roughly equal proportions of Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier sourced exclusively from the Mitchelton estate vineyard. Airstrip is a lively but tight blend of vigorous white fruit. Modest crop levels ranging from 2 to 3½ tonnes per acre give this wine its core intensity. Each individual block is managed and vinified separately to allow the different qualities of each variety, shaped by the unique vineyard site and soil profiles, to shine through. The individual parcels of fruit are moulded together during blending to produce the unique Airstrip style

Black Chook Viognier Marsanne Roussanne 2008

Black Chook is a collaboration between winemaking maestro Ben Riggs and Tony Parkinson, proprietor of the salubrious Penny's Hill. A mostly Viognier wine with further components of Marsanne and Roussanne, VMR saw McLaren Vale Marsanne and Roussanne crushed and vinified together. Meanwhile, the Viognier was made ready whilst fermenting quite alone in a separate vessel. The result is a seamless integration of fruit, a triumph in aromatics, a wine that presents a delicious, refreshing and flavoursome palate

Many of McLaren Vale’s vineyards are on free-draining soils underlain with limestone, formed by the calcareous remains of the local marine fauna. One such creature was the Hermit Crab, a reclusive little crustacean that to this day inhabits the cast-off shells of others.
