The wheat from which Effen is derived contains extremely low levels of fat and fatty acids. Fewer fatty acids mean less caramelization during distillation and the elimination of the harsh alcohol aftertaste that can be caused by traces of burnt sugar. Through a process called continuous of rectification, the liquor circulates through steel columns and is effectively distilled hundreds of times. As another means of avoiding caramelisation, Effen is distilled at much lower temperatures than other luxury vodkas. Effen is filtered through peat rather than the normal charcoal filtration.
