Samuel Smith migrated from Dorset England to Angaston in the colony of South Australia circa 1847, he took up work as a gardener with George Fife Angas, the virtual founder of the colony. In 1849, Smith bought thirty acres and planted vines by moonlight, the first ever vintages of Yalumba. One of his most enduring legacies were some unique clones of Shiraz, which were ultimately sown to the illustrious Mount Edelstone vineyard in 1912. Henry Best was a highly industrious merchant and butcher who serviced Ararat miners during the Victorian gold rush. Established 1898, Benromach distillery experienced many closures and changes of ownership prior to 1993, when Malt Whisky specialists Gordon & MacPhail rescued it. After an extensive refurbishment, Benromach was officially re opened by the Prince of Wales in 1998. Just two experienced distillers create Benromach, employing the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from nearby Romach Hills. These devoted distillers personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being treated to an extended maturation.
