The modern style of Australian Chardonnay, drawing on Penfolds extensive vineyard resources, Rawson's Retreat guarantees the drinker a thoroughly enjoyable taste of everyday wine at its very best. Exacting standards of viticultural management throughout the growing season ensures the winemaking team receive a quality of fruit that's worthy of the Penfold label. Careful vinification techniques are employed to ensure the wine retains all the virtue of the vineyard, while adding a measure of complexity through lees stirring and several months maturation under a selection of the finest oak, which also contributes balance and rich mouthfeel.
  Pale straw with lime green edges. Orchard notes, white peach and green melon are lifted by freshly grated lemon rind. Grapefruit and white peach flavours are generous, yet lithe on the palate. Citrus acidity provides line and length with subtle texture and spice from oak maturation. Clean, fresh and vibrant. The creamy mid palate is supported by a tropical fruit core for a wine that's structured to please.

An unfavourable vintage across most of Australia's winegrowing regions, the best reds this year were made by Penfolds. Extremes of cold and wet, around the country reduced much of the Cabernet Sauvignon in terms of quality and yield. Penfolds managed to creep through the adversities of the vintage, by selectively collating reduced batches from individual vineyards which made the A-grade. A well developed Bin 707, with spicey/ olive/ berry aromas, earthiness, balanced palate, sweet fruit, fine savoury tannins and vanilla oak.

A very mild growing season which suited the Coonawarra vineyards down to a tee, this was the year for exceptional Coonawarra Cabernet. The Barossa and McLaren Vale also yielded excellent batches of Cabernet for Penfolds, finer and more restrained, yet suitably impressive for inclusion into the super premium Bin 707. Brick red in colour, complex and controversial, the distinctive cherry/ tomato leaf, almost porty aromas and flavours of the 1982, were supported by a smooth palate, and the rich, fleshy characters of the vintage.

On initial tastings, a highly scented release with good cassis fruit. A cold winter throughout, the wet chilly growing season confounded the Barossa Cabernet, limiting the crop through hailstorm damage. A vintage of adversity for the Penfolds vineyards, nevertheless the yields produced a spine of good Cabernet fruit from which it was determined an excellent ultimate cuvee would be fashioned. Though the finish was originally noted as being quite hard and dry, the wine is characteristically savoury, with cassis, and immensely fine tannins.

After a dry winter, good rains in September arrived just in time to assist early growth, although this was less vigorous and therefore produced a smaller crop than normal. Conditions throughout summer were dry and warm before relieving rains and cooler conditions in autumn. Despite carrying many different Bin numbers in the early years, Grange was always labelled Bin 95 from the 1970 vintage. This wine is a favourite of Don Ditter, who worked at Penfolds from 1946 and succeeded Max Schubert as Chief Winemaker in 1975. The 1970 Penfolds Grange is a blend of 90 per cent Shiraz and 10 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, from Kalimna, the Barossa and Adelaide's Magill Estate vineyard. Vintage conditions were dry, a growing season with rainfall 40 per cent less than normal.

Penfolds Grange 1972 won a Gold and four other medals at Australian wine shows in 1973, 1976 and 1977. Originally described by the winemakers as, medium deep brick red in colour, intense liquoric dark chocolate blackberry violet aromas with hints of vanilla spice. A loose knit palate with herbs and camomile, meaty mocha flavours and fine cedary tannins. A single batch was unintentionally oxidized before bottling, resulting in some bottle variation.
