This is the third release from the Escarpment’s closely planted vineyard on Te Muna Road in Martinborough. "Kupe, Escarpment’s top pinot, is concentrated and complex with dark plum, herb and spice characters, meaty notes and subtle oak. 	Each $74.99 Dozen $899.88	The Escarpment winery is tucked into a hillside looking across a broad valley near Martinborough on New Zealand’s North Island. The Kupa site was immediately recognized for it's potential, and planted to Pinot Noir vines. The season was exemplary for this block, being the first fruit harvested along Te Muna Road after a warm, early ripening period. The spacing of 1.5m x 1m (6,600 vines/ha) approches the densities practised in Burgundy. Fermented in wooden French Cuves, hand plunged and aged in a combination of new and prior use French oak barriques, Kupe was given every priority during its elevation and now shows all the hallmarks of a grand Pinot wine. Alcohol 14.1%
	Bright crimson/ magenta. An aromatic plunge into some heady boysenberry and blackberry fruit, smokey, meaty elements and rich florals, pepperyness and earth. A concentrated core of earthy tannins, sharply focused and eddifying, black cherry and boysenberry fruit on the palate, anise and red liquorice, swathed within some of the most refined oak treatment. Impressive for its ripe, silky texture, incredible length and a lingering, engaging aftertaste. Planted to deep alluvial gravels, which the Martinborough terraces are renowned for, the site supports various clones, all growing in a very sheltered spot. Escarpment Voyager Pinot Noir 2006

Voyager is sourced from the McCreanor Vineyard, Princess Street, one of the oldest Pinot Noir vineyards in Martinborough (around twenty five years), an area blessed by good drainage and a cool summer microclimate. A combination of slightly heavier soils and a single clone 10/5 on its own roots, always rewards with a particularly supple Pinot Noir. Escarpment excels at formulating single vineyard wines from their small, but excellent, retinue of sites.
