John Duval is one of the world's best known winemakers, heir to a distinguished family tradition of winegrowing which spans four generations. As a child he grew up amongst the vines and handled fruit that was earmarked for the great Penfold flagships, he worked alonside Max Schubert and spent sixteen years as Penfolds chief. Eligo is crafted to be a transcendent expression of Shiraz. A wine of restrained power, rich in texture and palate length, Eligo represents the best of vintage, sourced from some excellent old vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys.

Since leaving Penfolds, Duval has consulted to a number of wineries in Europe, South America and Australia. He is a partner in the eminent Long Shadows label of Washington and continues to apply four decades of winemaking skill to some of the best fruit in the world. Eligo is sourced from hand picked Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys, it represents the best of vintage. Parcels are inoculated in small fermenters, the caps are closely managed and kept submerged. Some batches are kept up to two weeks on skins, others complete their ferments in completely new barrels. The completed Eligo is matured twenty months in a selection of mostly new fine grain 300 litres French oak hogsheads. Alcohol 14.5%

Dense purple red colour. A youthful expressive nose of blackberry, blueberries and dark chocolate. Multi layered palate with vibrant dark fruit. Intense, a wine of restrained power, rich texture and palate length, impressive structure and intensity of fruit.

John Duval knows about super premium Shiraz wines. He apprenticed under Max Scubert, his family supplied fruit and vines to Penfolds, and he was the chief winemaker behind the mighty Grange from 1986 to 2002. John Duval's aim with Eligo is to produce an elegant expression of Barossa Shiraz, a wine with restrained power, rich texture and palate length. It represents the best of his vineyard pick from 2005, a vintage which has been rated as excellent, coming off some favourable weather conditions and good vine balance.

John Duval Entity Shiraz 2007

John Duval's aim with Entity is to produce a wine that's completely true to the Barossa Valley, the variety and growing season. 2007 was a more challenging vintage, with ongoing drought conditions and frost effects reducing yields and resulting in a very early start to vintage. The first Shiraz was picked nearly three weeks earlier than average. Some Eden Valley Shiraz has ben added this year to help maintain the elegance and style of Entity. The more subtle French oak was chosen to compliment the ripe blackberry, blueberry fruit.

Sourced from old vineyards in Krondorf, Tanunda and Light Pass, a component of Eden Valley Shiraz has been included to maintain the elegance and purity of style. John Duval's objective with Entity is to construct a wine that's completely true to the grand old vineyards of the Barossa. Subtle French oak was chosen to compliment the ripe dark fruits. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques are employed, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and depth of fruit to insure great potential for development.

John Duval Plexus GSM 2007

John Duval's aim with Plexus is to express the wide spectrum of red fruit flavours from Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre, but also provide structure with a seamless balance and long finish. A low percentage of new oak adds complexity without dominating the berry fruit. Grenache is sourced from old bush vines fifty to sixty years of age from the Stockwell, Light Pass and Krondorf regions. Mourvedre is collated from old bush vines, some over a century old, grown to precious little sites in the Light Pass and Krondorf regions.

Behind every great winemaker is a winemaker's wife. Duval recounts how he finally gave in to Mrs Duval's appeals and created his estate's first white wine. A winemaker may spend decades refining his skills but a woman's intuition rules. Duval's Rhone styled cépage of Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier has been a runaway success. Duval's aim with Plexus MRV is to promote a vibrant expression of fruit aromas from the interaction of the three varieties, to build structure and texture on the palate, rather than the blend's typical acid crispness.
