Graeme Melton and a mate were travelling across South Australia in 1973, their EH Holden was in dire need of maintenance and Graeme took up casual work at a passing winery. The site supervisor was Peter Lehmann and young Graeme had his epiphany on the road to Barossa Valley. Lehmann suggested that Graeme change his name to Charlie and take the pilgrimmage to Vallee Rhone. Charlie became prepossessed with the culture of old vines Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre. He returned to the Barossa, at a time when old vineyard fruit was made into flagon Port and growers were destroying their historic sites in return for government grants. Charlie emabarked on a crusade to conserve and restore the ancient vines, establishing his cellars at Tanunda along Krondorf Road. He has since retained the most precious parcels, once destined for the logger's axe, they are now the genesis of fruit.. Melton makes a mean mourvedre»
Maid Of Mornington's Mists»
After founding Mornington's eminent Moorooduc Estate and decades crafting the most memorable vintages for Mornington's leading brands, Richard McIntyre established a tiny, single hectare vineyard, on a prominent, high elevation site at Arthur's Seat, with a view to producing limited yields of the most exquisite small batch wines. The techniques of choice are wild yeast ferments, minimal intervention and good French oak, with a nod to traditional Burgundian practices, which allow the wines to speak of provenance, express their specificity of clone and articulate their sense of place. There's not much Bellingham made but every bottle passes through the hands of a team member who has been involved with the vintage since pruning and budburst. From humble beginnings to a distinguished world wide brand, Konrad Wines have grown out of one man's love for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Family owned, operated and grown, hand crafted and estate bottled, Konrad hope that you get as much pleasure out of their wines as the happy team enjoy making them. After many years of international success, Konrad Wines remain fully owned by the Hengstler family, Konrad and Sigrun, their two sons, Conrad and Carlo. The Hengstlers originally migrated from Germany to Australia. While travelling through New Zealand, Konrad discovered Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and was immediately attracted to the distinctive character of wine. The Konrads established their first Marlborough plantings in 1996 and launched a range of wines from their forty hectares of vineyard in the Wairau and Waihopai Valleys.

Every year, after completion of harvest and fermentations, wines from the two unique climes are assembled into the most splendid vintages of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, a generous palette of fruit which aaffords an opportunity to maintain the same high quality and consistent quality of wines year after year. The grapes for the Gewurztraminer and the award winning Riesling are grown exclusively in the Waihopai Valley next to the estate office and family home. Quality is the absolute focus of Konrad and it starts in the vineyard where no corners are cut, it continues at the wineworks where an uncompromising standard of vinification is the key.

Fruit is sourced from organically farmed & BioGro certified grapes in the family owned Waihopai Valley Vineyard,fully certified BioGro status, grown without the use of synthetic, fungicides, insecticides or herbicides. The vines are cultivated under practices which force the roots to delve down into the soil to extract moisture and nutrients from the sub-soil, resulting in more complex flavours.

Being a family business, control over quality is completely hands on. Konrad Hengstler's philosophy is that the best fertilizer are the footprints of the farmer. Through every day personal involvement and a commitment to the fundamentals of natural winemaking, a tradition of the most exquisite vintages in Marlborough wine are achieved, each and every year.
