Wines by Haan

Haan Merlot Prestige 2008
Haan is all about the magnificence of fruit grown to the superlative Hanenhof Vineyard. The original property was purchased in 1853 by George Friedrich Schmidt for one pound per acre. Development of the site to the most exacting standards has been the keystone of success, to which must be added the consuming pursuit of excellence in a Merlot wine. Sometimes the inclusion of a component Cabernet Franc can contribute to a distinctive, classically Medoc styling, deeply flavoursome and powerfully driven by concentratations of fruit.

The splendid Merlot vines are two decades old, grown to sandy loams with a two metre clay base. The vines are trellised by wire to keep the foliage upright and to expose the fruit to the maximum amount of sunlight. Fruit is cropped to a scant 3½ tonnes per acre and ripened to 15° baume before picking. Prestige is inoculated with choice yeasts to enhance fruit definition and depth of palate. The skins are plunged and pumped over three times per day, as the fermenting wine is allowed to rest on skins for seven days, developing maximum colour and flavour extractions. Following malolactic, the wine is racked into select French oak barriques and allowed to mature for twenty four months.
Plum red in colour. A very powerful wine in aroma and palate structure. The bouquet is characterized by black cherries and ripe plums, layered with characters of spicy toasted oak, which gives complexity. This complex expression extends onto the palate, rich and voluptuous, a balance of plum fruits, dark fruit cake and hints of mocha coffee, further emphasized by the silky oak and fruit tannins, achieving great length and persistence. To fully appreciate, Prestige should be decanted three hours before service.
