Hugo McLaren Vale Shiraz 2010

Premiere McLaren Vale Shiraz with origins dating back to the 1950s, the subject of copious industry accolades over the decades, including a prestigious blue gold award at the Sydney International. Due to the limited yields of vintage 2009, no Reserve was edition was bottled, so all the low cropping, old vines, dry grown fruit was included in the estate's white label Shiraz, greatly enhancing the depth of flavour and overall complexity. Fully approachable upon release, serve with a homemade pilaf and goat meatballs.

Colin Hugo planted the estate's original Shiraz vines on the family vineyard at McLaren Flat in the 1950s. By the 1970s, John Hugo had followed in his father's footsteps, assuming the responsibility as steward of the vines and taking a further step, vinifying the best grapes under his own label. There are now over thirty hectares of estate plantings, with part of the grape production sold to other winemaking operations. The finest batches of fruit are held back for the estate's own label. Consistency is what Hugo Wines strive for, the fact that all of the fruit is estate grown makes the job that much easier. The climate, soils and proximity to the coast are also contributing factors in maintaining the quality of the wine.

Clear, deep and intense with ruby/purple hues. Lifted, clean fruit scents of mulberry, plum and raspberry with notes of nutty vanilla oak and black pepper with a hint of cinnamon spice. Luscious black and red fruit flavours of redcurrant, plums and mulberry, vegetal and spicy notes. A complex dry style with good acid/ tannin balance, well rounded and medium to full bodied, offering sustained palate length. Approachable now with the promise of opulence as it evolves, the finish is supported by an extended maturation in fine American oak.
