Wines by Jamsheed

Jamsheed Healesville Syrah 2011
An artisanal, single vineyard effort of 250 cases production by small batch winemaker Gary Mills, ex of Margaret River's Amberley Estate and California's Ridge Vineyard. Mills will pick five or six sites per vintage and retain the best for his Jamsheed single vineyard series. Yarra Valley Syrahs are a favourite of Mills for their superb perfume and large chalky, ageable tannins. Purity, intensity and texture define Jamsheeds approach to Syrah, a treat for enthusiasts of the pastoral genre, exhibiting spiced musk fruit flavours and evocative earth characters.

Jamsheed was a Persian king whose fondness for fresh grapes lead him to store them in jars over winter where they would inevitably spontaneously ferment and turn into wine. The choicest parcels of Shiraz are selected from the Hill Paddock Vineyard at Healesville in the Yarra Valley, planted by Dr Richard Gutch in 1995% Two thirds of the pick is vinified as whole bunches to indigenous yeasts in traditional open fermenters. No acid, enzymes or additives other than a small amount of sulphur dioxide are added. After forty days, the wine is pressed to a selection of one and two years old larger French oak barrels and kept on sedimentery yeast lees for ten months before bottling, unfilltered and unfined. Alcohol 13.7%
Dark ruby purple colour. Well perfumed with peppery plums, violets, liquorice and bramble fruits. A coffee/ black/ raspberry flavoured wine with complex spice, luscious stalkiness, raspberry acid, crisp tannins and sweet graphite from the whole bunch ferments. Charming, complex and very cool climate Syrah in style, pair Jamsheed off with and meaty Asian bites, braised game and grills.
