Kennedy Heathcote Shiraz 2008

John and Patricia Kennedy make a very special wine. Work in the vineyard is focused on unravelling intricacies within their site, dentifying those areas which produce the best fruit. The property was carefully chosen and the viticulture is tailored to growing grapes that are flavoursome, structured and balanced, to be made into wine by the eminent Sandro Mosele.

The Kennedy Vineyard is located on prime land along the east facing slope of the Mount Camel Range on Heathcote's famed Cambrian soil. Pruning has been carefully undertaken to produce vines which are balanced to evenly ripen the crop load. Separate parcels of fruit were handpicked, de-stemmed and vinified in small open fermenters, employing indigenous yeasts and gentle plunging. After pressing to barrel, the wine was allowed to undergo a natural malolactic fermentation in spring. The best barrels of wine are selected for the Kennedy Label. Matured in a combination of new and prior use French oak barriques followed by bottling under the taint free DIAM technical cork.

Deep purple red. The aroma, while initially restrained opens up with a little breathing. Fragrant cherry and summer berries, brown spices and subtle oak notes. Mixed spices, nutmeg, pepper and black currants are soon filling the glass. Sweet blood plum and currants are immediately revealed on the front palate followed by a nice touch of spice. The ripe flavours are supported by fine supple tannins and just the right amount of acidity along the entire length of palate through to the finish. Kennedy is an elegant, well balanced, Heathcote Shiraz.
