Wines by Sanguine

Sanguine Progeny Shiraz 2012
Sanguine's inaugural release was universally embraced by enthusiasts of fine Heathcote Shiraz, selling out in less than a week. Sanguine employ traditional winemaking practices such as small fermentation tanks, gravity feeding and no added yeasts. Whilst this can be labour intensive, Sanguine believe it ensures the preservation of natural fruit flavours and the true expression of Heathcote's inimitable terroir. Progeny is a cépage of Shiraz with a small component of Viognier, concurrently hand picked and co-fermented to achieve depth and integration.

Sanguine's vineyard is trained to vertical shoot positioning trellis system, thereby opening up the canopy, reducing the risk of disease and exposing the bunches to direct sunlight for ripening. The vines are cane pruned to a single fruiting wire with a maximum of twenty buds per vine. To conserve the natural balance within the soils and overall health of vines, Sanguine have managed the vineyard organically by utilizing organic fertilizers and mulching to control weed growth. Grapes are destemmed, lightly crushed and naturally vinified with wild indigenous yeasts in small open fermenters. The wine is then transferred via gravity into predominantly French oak barriques for a year's maturation.
Dark, impenetrable ruby hues. Progeny displays aromas of ripe blackberry and dark plum. It is vibrant and youthful with spicy undertones and subtle oak. The aim is to produce a fragrant, soft, fruit filled style that's more approachable as a young wine. Spice and dry herbs with floral and berry undertones persist on the bouquet combined with the Viognier apricot character. The palate is rich with dark juicy fruit that rolls through to the end as it develops subtle spice. The mouthfeel is textural and elegant, long and dry with a burst of berry fruit and a finish that's dry and spicy. A Shiraz that lingers long and soft with well balanced tannins and acid. Progeny shows elegance, will open up with decanting and cellars extremely well.
