Shadowfax Chardonnay 2010

Shadowfax has progressed from strength to strength in a very short space of time, due in no small part to the high quality of fruit. A prolific trophy and gold winner, Shadowfax have achieved the new wave of Chardonnay, refreshingly fruit driven, livelier than it's stylistic prescursors, characterised by slatey, flavoursome acidity, a touch of leesy complexity and a pleasing dryness. A modern style of Victorian Chardonnay showing excellent palate weight and structure, to accompany grilled flathead fillets or a trussed and roast free range chicken with hazelnut and sorrel.

Of particular importance to Shadowfax are the very close relationships with a select group of growers who provide harvests of the most intensely flavoured Chardonnay. Grapes are all hand picked, transported to the wineworks at Werribee and carefully whole bunch pressed. Juices are transferred to a combination of new and prior use French oak barriques and hogsheads, inoculated by naturally occurring yeasts and vinified at moderate temperatures, fermented to dry. After time spent ageing in oak under the expansive and cavernous Shadowfax estate cellars, the barrels are racked to tank for settling, assemblage and filtration before bottling.

Youthful straw green colour with a bright edge. Bouquet is intense and very expressive, complex aromas of white flowers, lightly grilled nuts, earth and grapefruits. Opens with time in the glass to reveal more secondary complexities and a hint of reduction. Concentrated, balanced, complex palate, showing its cooler origins. Grapefruit pith, citrus and floral flavours are complemented by maritime characters of melon, fig and pear. Oak and lees add complexity, tasty natural acidity ensures the palate finishes cleanly. An effusive Chardonnay wine with good concentration of flavour and subtle, balanced oak influence.
