Sandpiper Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Labelled for a remarkable migratory bird, which can be seen fossicking around the Thorn Clarke vineyards as it prepares to fly north, sometimes as far as Siberia, before the chill of winter shrouds the valley. Is the Barossa really that cold? Sandpiper represents a highly regional expression, showing the greener, slightly more vegetative qualities of temperate clime Cabernet Sauvignon. A long spell under a selection of tightly grained French oak barrels imparts liquorice characters over the essential Barossa dark chocolate and blackberry flavours.

Sandpiper Chardonnay 2012

The Thorn-Clarke family can be proud of a long history growing the Barossa's finest Chardonnay, the best batches are retained for their own labels. Sandpiper sits lightly oaked, retaining a refreshing fruit character as it undergoes extended yeast maturation. A delicious Chardonnay dominated by nuances of white peach and tropical fruits over a nutty, lengthy palate. Sandpiper makes a stylish aperitif and is exquisite alongside good food, a personable wine of classic Eden Valley charm, creamy with a touch of mineral before a crisp, cleansing finish.

Sandpiper Pinot Chardonnay N.V

A handmade Methode Traditionelle sparkling from the Mt Crawford parcel, named after the migratory bird which visits the Thorn-Clarke vineyard. This site was specially selected as it is so ideal to grow the two grape varieties which respond to cold climate. 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay grapes were picked at night and barrel aged for six months on lees to infuse the great depth of Pinot flavour. The result of the Thorn-Clarke's careful site selection and superb winecraft is a deep, guava coloured, full and yeasty Soth Australian sparkler brimming with body and hints of stonefruit.

Sandpiper Pinot Gris 2011

Thorn-Clarke are one of the Barossa's largest and most highly awarded wine grape growers. Their Mount Crawford Vineyard up in the Eden Valley holds five hectares of choice Pinot Grigio vines. Fruit grown here translates into a generously proportioned Pinot Grigio wine with outstanding varietal character. A delicately oaked Eden Valley Chardonnay, produced in small quantities by one of the Barossa'a great winemaking dynasties. Barrel aged, it sees an extended period on lees to give a more savoury flavour, achieving a round, voluptuous body.

At a time when the government was paying growers to pull vines in an attempt to curtail the oversupply of wine grapes, David Clarke was working against trend, testing soils and buying land (under car headlights to avoid local farmer suspicion) with the intention of establishing the finest Barossa vineyards. Thorn-Clarke Quartage is a complex yet seamless cépage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc provide wonderful upfront berry fruit characters, Malbec contributes great depth of flavour and intensity, a tenth of good Merlot adds suppleness.
