Wignalls Cabernet Merlot 2008

A star studded boutique winery that's amassed multi trophy and gold. Wignall was awarded Trophy at the Perth Sheraton Wine Awards for their blended Cabernet by the illustrious Len Evans himself. The superior terroir on the Wignall property has consistently sprouted some of the finest fruit grown in the Great Southern.

A mostly Cabernet wine with about a quarter of Merlot, in the compelling styling which has established itself as a genre. Wignalls was established in 1982 after investigations into terroir by founder Dr Bill Wignall. Results showed Albany's growing conditions in spring and summer were virtually identical to the Burgundy winegrowing region. Inaugural vintages saw amazing results, attracting gold medals and trophies. Subsequently over fifty gold and trophies have been received by this boutique winery to date, in Australia and from international competitions. Pruning throughout June and July followed by fruit picking in March to April, is all done by hand, to create a wine that is as natural and clean as is possible. Approx 13.5%

Deep scarlet colour. Announced by a bouquet of raspberries and blackcurrant, followed by sweet and spicy vanillan with hints of cigarbox and pencil from the new French oak. A chocolate and richly liqueured palate, offering savoury tannins and sweet fruit elements, cocoa and spice with smacks of blackberry and plum. Rewarkable complexity on the tongue, olive and bay leaf, blueberry and pastille, all coalesce into a tightly integrated palate. This senational wine is blessed by the finest textures and is supported by a long, elegant structure. The palate is lively and long, her sweet and savoury elements of currant, stewed fig and proscuito, culminate in a harmonious finish framed by gently yielding tannins.
