Airline pilots make surprisingly good wine. Their appreciation of the sciences, a respect for the weather and a bird's eye view of the land, all invaluable to the winemaker's art. John Ellis would take every opportune weekend away from his regular New York Paris route, to pursue a passion for viticulture. He planted the first commercial Cabernet Merlot vines in the Hamptons and found time between trans atlantic flights to work vintages amongst the Grand Cru vineyards of La Bourgogne. Grand Marque Of Glenrowan»
Right next to the Merry Widow Inn at Glenrowan, infamous of Kelly gang folklore, Richard Bailey set up shop to service prospectors during the great Victorian gold rush of the 1860s. Rows of newly planted Shiraz soon followed and the Baileys released their first vintage in 1870. The region was ultimately infected by the terrible vine killing plague of the 1890s, a guarded blessing for Glenrowan, which elevated the quarantine status of its vitiated vineyards to a marque of the highest provenance. Jane Mitchell is one of Clare Valley's leading wine industry identities, Clare Valley Legend and Clare Valley Winemakers Hall of Fame, Centenary Federation of Australia Medal, SA Tourism Commission, Australian Regional Winemakers Forum, Wine Federation of Australia Council and Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation Board. Swings & Roundabouts retain access to some of Western Australia's best vineyards. Their rounder and more deliberate style of Chardonnay targets fresh drinking rather than oak overkill. The pick of Margaret River's fruit is vinified into a finely honed Chardonnay wine with effusive stonefruit/ apple characters and brisk vegetative acidity, made even more attractive by a course of luxurious barrel ferments, adding texture and infusing the wine with warming vanilla spice. A treat alongside prawns or chicken caesar, Swings & Roundabouts is an easy to appreciate aperitif style.

A collation of fruit from the estate's Swings vineyard alongside parcels from some of the most ardent growers, vinified and augmented by ageing in a third of French oak to complement it's creamy palate, loads of fresh fruit fragrance and regional Chardonnay characters. Having earned a reputation as one of West Australia's leading winemakers, based around a young and enthusiastic team, Swings & Roundabouts are accomplished at crafting the vigorous Margaret River styles. Picked throughout the cool of night, grapes are cold pressed and clear juice fermented to natural yeasts. Half of the wine is treated to oak barrel and matured several months under the estate cellars. Alcohol 13.0%
Pale green to light luminous straw hues. Lifted attractive melon fruits on the bouquet with hints of lifted nectarine, subtle vanillin oak in the background adds complexity and depth to the overall impression. Fruit filled, dry and medium bodied to taste, freshly cut orchard fruit and melon flavours lead to a generous and creamy middle palate, textured, structured and fine, resolving on a persistent, clean and lingering finish.

Swings Roundabouts
Swings & Roundabouts is based in the Margaret River region, the cellar door and home vineyard is at 2807 Caves Rd, Yallingup

The estate produces pure Margaret River styles and West Australian blends from the Swings vineyard and local shareholder and contract growers. The strong belief is in the northern Margaret River fruit that can develop wines with elegant Mediterranean structure for great drinking, with or without food.

Swings Roundabouts

Margaret River’s micro climate is now well recognized as having great advantage for super premium wine crafting, unique soils, warm summers with cooling afternoon sea breezes and wet and cold winters make it grape heaven.

Mark Lane runs the show. He found his way to Margaret River in a roundabout way. For a while he made cheese in Melbourne. No doubt interesting, but why would you do that if you can do this! He gained winemaking apprenticeships in the Yarra Valley with the likes of Tarrawarra and Eyton-on-Yarra before making the trek west to take up the position of Chief Winemaker with Deep Woods and then Flying Fish Cove wines.

Mark Lane and the team are well credentialed, serious winemaking chaps who have, according to wine reviewer Ray Jordan won a “staggering list of awards”. But while stern faced about the wine itself, the rest is pretty relaxed. Margaret River is a cool and casual place to hang out so you’ll find the personalities here very friendly and far from intimidating.

Having developed a reputation as one of Margaret River’s leading winemakers, Mark has pulled together a young and enthusiastic team to establish Swings & Roundabouts…all keen to make a difference. He balances life by cooking, taking his teenage daughter to local concerts and driving fast cars fast. He enjoys a complete lack of interest in football (astonishing for a Victorian!) and music makes him happy (so the t-shirt says).

The estate's winemaking operation is also home, and it's been equipped with all that is important to the winemakers. A wood fire pizza oven, a serious coffee machine, lots of comfy leather sofas…and of course the wines. The vine-shaded verandah helps escape those hot summer days, with view over rolling hills, vines and kangaroos.
