Heirloom Vineyards were born of love. A romance between an esteemed wine judge and his protege, consumated by a shared passion to preserve the integrity of venerable old vineyards. A deference for the sanctity of the soil and adherence to the timeless procedures of organic viticulture, were an integral part of the vision. Their parching quest, to secure some grand old blocks of vine in the elder precincts of Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, Barossa and Valley Eden, were followed by years of corrective husbandry, pencil label releases and bespoke vintages. The story of Langmeil begins with early Barossa settlement, planted to Shiraz by Christian Auricht in the 1840s, the estate vineyards were restored by the Lindner and Bitter families during the 1990s. Some of Herr Auricht's original plantings are still in production, three and a half priceless acres of gnarled, dry grown vines which provided the cuttings for much of Langmeil's refurbished heirloom parcels. Halls Gap Vineyard was planted 1969, along the steep eastern slopes and parched rocky crags of Grampians Ranges, at the very beginning of a renaissance in Victorian viticulture. Since early establishment in the 1860s by the noble Houses of Seppelt and Bests, the region had earned the most elite peerage, a provenance of extraordinary red wines, bursting with bramble opulence and lined with limousin tannins. The family Hentschke have been Barossa farming since 1842, they know from good soils and settle on nothing but the finest land. Les Setilles is a dependable staple of the estate portfolio, vinified with parcels appropriated from loyal suppliers and vignerons in Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault. Olivier Leflaive enjoy a close relationship with some of the finest growers along the Cote d'Or. People who love managing vines just as much as they enjoy the wine which is the fruit of their work. The calcareous clay soil vineyards face southeast to south and lie on a flat, even terrain. Each recolte is hand crafted into a cuvee of elegance and finesse reflecting the virtue of Cote d'Or.
Pale yellow gold colour. A tantalising combination of fresh citrus and apple notes, enriched with vanilla and hints of warm brioche, a lovely wine, finishing long, clean and satisfying.
