Lindsay McCall's enthusiasm for great wine began in the 1970s, he established his first Mornington plantings in 1985 on the site of a derelict orchard at Red Hill along Paringa Road. From day one, McCall focused on exactingly managing the soils and the vines, after completing his day job as local school teacher. His affinity for the land and astonishing feel for winemaking produced monumental vintages of Pinot Noir, which propelled the exquisite range of Paringa Estate wines to international renown. Three British Army officers, in their capacity as agents of the East India Company, established one of Western Australia's first agricultural enterprises in 1836. Named after Captain Richmond Houghton, it was not until Thomas Yule's stewardship that vines were planted and the first vintage of Houghton wine flowed in 1859. Travails Of Tahbilk»
Returning to his home along the Nagambie Lakes after the completion of service during World War II, Eric Purbrick discovered a cache of wine, hidden circa 1876 under the family estate cellars. Though pale in colour, it was sound and drinkable after seven decades. The promise of long lived red wine inspired Purbrick to establish new plantings at Chateau Tahbilk in 1949, today they are some of Victoria's oldest productive Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Mark Lane found his way to Margaret River in a roundabout way. For a while he made cheese and wine in Victoria with the likes of Tarrawarra and Eyton-on-Yarra before taking the trek west to take up position as chief winemaker with Deep Woods and Flying Fish Cove. Having earned a reputation as one of Margaret River's most talented winemakers, Lane pulled together a young and enthusiastic team to establish Swings & Roundabouts. Drawing the highest quality Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon from estate vineyards, the fruit is gently processed to achieve maximum flavour profiles and aromaticness. Early bottling is a key element to ensuring that the wine retains freshness and vivacity.
Pale green hue. Lifted fresh crystalline sharp fruit that's perfectly clean, succulent Sauvignon Blanc freshness with a dry Semillon background. Flint dry but with an explosive first impact of sweet racy fruit, the palate is medium to light bodied, slatey savouryness and a quenching minerality, it's a wine in fine form, long, perfectly fruit driven and dry, with a fine clean finish and crisp acidity. Swings & Roundabouts is based in the Margaret River region, the cellar door and home vineyard is at 2807 Caves Rd, Yallingup

The estate produces pure Margaret River styles and West Australian blends from the Swings vineyard and local shareholder and contract growers. The strong belief is in the northern Margaret River fruit that can develop wines with elegant Mediterranean structure for great drinking, with or without food.

Margaret River’s micro climate is now well recognized as having great advantage for super premium wine crafting, unique soils, warm summers with cooling afternoon sea breezes and wet and cold winters make it grape heaven.

Mark Lane runs the show. He found his way to Margaret River in a roundabout way. For a while he made cheese in Melbourne. No doubt interesting, but why would you do that if you can do this! He gained winemaking apprenticeships in the Yarra Valley with the likes of Tarrawarra and Eyton-on-Yarra before making the trek west to take up the position of Chief Winemaker with Deep Woods and then Flying Fish Cove wines.

Mark Lane and the team are well credentialed, serious winemaking chaps who have, according to wine reviewer Ray Jordan won a “staggering list of awards”. But while stern faced about the wine itself, the rest is pretty relaxed. Margaret River is a cool and casual place to hang out so you’ll find the personalities here very friendly and far from intimidating.

Having developed a reputation as one of Margaret River’s leading winemakers, Mark has pulled together a young and enthusiastic team to establish Swings & Roundabouts…all keen to make a difference. He balances life by cooking, taking his teenage daughter to local concerts and driving fast cars fast. He enjoys a complete lack of interest in football (astonishing for a Victorian!) and music makes him happy (so the t-shirt says).

The estate's winemaking operation is also home, and it's been equipped with all that is important to the winemakers. A wood fire pizza oven, a serious coffee machine, lots of comfy leather sofas…and of course the wines. The vine-shaded verandah helps escape those hot summer days, with view over rolling hills, vines and kangaroos.
