Pennys Hill Cracking Black Shiraz 2011

Planted in 1991 and added to the Penny's Hill estate vineyard group in 1993, Malpas Road is named after the pioneering family who held lands in what was originally referred to as Bay of Biscay. A reference to the relatively infertile cracking, grey black soil upon which the hand tended Shiraz patch does its work. The fissures which occur as the black soils crack apart, sever surplus root structure, a process which naturally lessens vine vigour, enhancing the virtue of the grape and ultimate quality of wine. Unmistakably McLaren Vale, even more so Penny's Hill.

Ben Riggs is one of Australia's pre-eminent winemakers and has made a major contribution to the industry as a whole. He has spent ten years as a board member of McLaren Vale Winemakers Inc, three as Chairman. He also chaired the McLaren Vale Wine Show over a five year period and was winner of the first two Great Australian Shiraz Challenges.
