Graeme Melton and a mate were travelling across South Australia in 1973, their EH Holden was in dire need of maintenance and Graeme took up casual work at a passing winery. The site supervisor was Peter Lehmann and young Graeme had his epiphany on the road to Barossa Valley. Lehmann suggested that Graeme change his name to Charlie and take the pilgrimmage to Vallee Rhone. Charlie became prepossessed with the culture of old vines Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre. He returned to the Barossa, at a time when old vineyard fruit was made into flagon Port and growers were destroying their historic sites in return for government grants. Airline pilots make surprisingly good wine. Their appreciation of the sciences, a respect for the weather and a bird's eye view of the land, all invaluable to the winemaker's art. John Ellis would take every opportune weekend away from his regular New York Paris route, to pursue a passion for viticulture. He planted the first commercial Cabernet Merlot vines in the Hamptons and found time between trans atlantic flights to work vintages amongst the Grand Cru vineyards of La Bourgogne. The story of Langmeil begins with early Barossa settlement, planted to Shiraz by Christian Auricht in the 1840s, the estate vineyards were restored by the Lindner and Bitter families during the 1990s. Some of Herr Auricht's original plantings are still in production, three and a half priceless acres of gnarled, dry grown vines which provided the cuttings for much of Langmeil's refurbished heirloom parcels. Inspired by images as bright and as intense as the wines, Some Young Punks draw inspiration from low brow literature of the pulp fiction era. Each wine, each vintage and each label is a moment that will never come again, a winemaker should only ever promise to be consistently good, not just consistent. Each time Punks make a wine it may be the last, if it isn't worthy of being the last then it will not wear Roller Skates or be dressed in Some Young name.

We wanted to do something that had been done before, to make exceptional wine with small estate charm

We blame the booze. The whiff and the swill did us in and all that was left to do was to make more. In many ways the wines that weren’t worth the pull on the cork caused this as much as the wines that we will never have the pleasure of decorking again.

The ethos is simple, to create charismatic wines that are true to what Some Young Punks think wine is about. This is Passion, a monster bigger than the three of us that leads us to soapbox, grandstand and sometimes pass out on the couch.

We believe that awesome wine is a powerful aid to creativity, there is always the danger that while drinking a bottle of Punks, you may also be pushed to acts of complete random. It keeps us ticking over.

I refer you, the jury, to the gaudy bottles of plonk stamped Some Young Punks. It's OK to judge a book by its cover , we judged the covers of books to decide on these labels.

We need you to see us, and we don't have lineage or tithe, not even a family crest to take up the papaer on the glass. These labels are as bright and bold as the wines they clothe.

Each wine, each vintage and each label is a moment that will never come again, a winemaker should only ever promise to be consistently good, not just consistent.

Each time we make a wine it may be the last wine we make, and if it isn't worthy of being the last then it will not wear the Some Young Punks name.

We believe that awesome wine is a powerful aid to creativity. The truth is that the wines so far have almost made themselves. The best fruit always does.
