Returning to his home along the Nagambie Lakes after the completion of service during World War II, Eric Purbrick discovered a cache of wine, hidden circa 1876 under the family estate cellars. Though pale in colour, it was sound and drinkable after seven decades. The promise of long lived red wine inspired Purbrick to establish new plantings at Chateau Tahbilk in 1949, today they are some of Victoria's oldest productive Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Having barely scraped through the ravages of phyloxera and a period of disrepute, the fortunes of Tahbilk were turned around by Purbrick who was the first to market Australian wine under its varietal name. Tahbilk proudly hosts the largest, single holding of.. Phyloxera, ancient cellars & seriously old vines»
The sensational vintages of St John's Road were generations in the making, the fruit of grand old vineyards and the progeny of families which have tilled Barossa soil since early settlement. The landed gentry along St John's Road represent a heritage of the most distinguished names in Australian viticulture, Lehmann and Lienert, Zander, Kalleske and Schutz. With each vintage, they earmark small parcels of the most exceptional Barossa fruit, to be treated to a course of traditional open ferments and term of age in the finest French oak. Planted to the tranquil Shangri-La of a sun warmed slope in Yarra Valley, TarraWarra was established 1983 by the founders of the Sussan and Sportsgirl brands. Philanthropists and patrons of the arts, Mr and Mrs Besen, AO and AO respectively, took a highly aesthetic approach to the pursuit of viticulture. Healthy soils and happy fauna were the means to an end, good wine comes from a sound ecology, but great wine needs the inspiration of a holistic engagement with the arts. It is here at Healesville that habitues can savour the Sauvignon while immersing themselves amongst the work of our national masters. Les Vignobles providing fruit for the vinification of Belleruche are spread out across several appellations along the Cotes du Rhône, Drôme and Vaucluse, Gard and Ardeche. Vines are planted on slightly varied soils, alluvial clays, sand and limestones, a patchwork which contributes extraordinary richness and complexity to the final wine. Grapes are all hand harvested at full maturity, destemmed and macerated over a period of fifteen days, extracting tannins and developing good structure which permits the ageing and guarantees stability of the wine. Following inoculation and vinification in a selection of traditional fermenters, Belleruche is aged in large oak vats and assembled in the spring.
Garnet red colour. Red fruit aromas, morello cherries and red liquorice, milled pepper, bay leaf and spice. The palate exhibits great structure, layered with crisp red currant and bramble fruit flavours, olives and applejack, before resolving on an engagingly aromtic finish, over a length of firm, sustained and silky tannins.
